Hard Work

Today is the last post before a long hiatus. We're out of school until January 2, so Mama Doodles won't be back until 2019!

Here's one more joke for the road.

Original Wrappers

Looks like I forgot to post yesterday's joke! That means double doodles today.

Here's yesterday's:

A co-worker told me a joke yesterday that I thought would be perfect to send in the boy's lunch today.

One more joke until our Winter break begins!

Two Jokes, Folks!

And it's not even because I forgot to post yesterday! The boy has a field trip today, and I can't remember whether or not he's supposed to bring a bagged lunch. My neighbor is out of town, and her daughter is in the boy's class. She couldn't remember either, so asked if I could pack a lunch for her daughter just in case. It felt weird making a lunch without a joke in it, so she got one too!

Wrapped Up

Not going to lie. I usually have wrapped gifts under my tree by this point. Not this year, though. I have a bunch bought, just haven't had time to wrap any. My tree skirt looks so naked.

I need a couple of these little cuties to help me get my present game under wraps.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Christmas is my favorite. I LOVE buying presents for people. It's probably my husband's least favorite as a result of this because I spend way too much money every year. I can't help it. Giving gifts is my favorite.

We only have one week of school left before the boy and I are done for Winter Break. We're taking an extra week this year to spend some time with family. Since we won't be at school for the last week leading up to Christmas, I figured I'd start the holiday jokes now.

Here's yesterday's joke, that I forgot to post.

And today's joke, that can work for nearly every holiday!

Better Out Loud

I haven't had a chance to talk to the boy about today's joke. We've had a busy day. I did tell it to some of the older kids at school today, and I think it works much better when said out loud.

Snow Buddy

When we woke up this morning, it looked and smelled like snow. We didn't get any, but it inspired today's joke and doodle all the same.

Featherweight

We had a long rainy weekend, but the clouds brought warmer temperatures with them. It's still a bit wet out this morning, and I think that influenced today's doodle, just a bit.

For some reason, the first light blue thing that popped into my head was a little cloud. I think it's a perfect fit for this joke.

Another Day Late

Yesterday was Movie Night at the boy's school. The movie they showed was Toy Story 3. The boy loves movie night, and was excited. I thought I'd make the joke Movie Night themed to help make the day even more special.

A fun thing I learned while telling this joke to kids at the boy's school: there are a lot of kids who don't know what tater tots are.

Polar Punchlines

It's still delightfully frigid here this morning, and I'm trying to psyche myself up for our daily walk to school. As expected, I stuck with wintry jokes for today's doodle.

On a side note, I think it's time to get new pens. I keep tearing the napkins and have to dry dark lines to cover up the torn bits.

Headgear

Our wind chill today has been hanging around the low 20s. It's been a bit chilly. I sent in today's joke with the boy to embrace this cold front.

A little explanation was needed since most of the kiddos had never heard of a snowcap.

Our temps for the week look like they'll stay relatively low. There might be more cold weather jokes in the near future as a result.

Gotta Catch 'Em All

'Tis the season to be catching all the colds. Thought at least one of the doodles should embrace this germfest.

Remember to wash your hands!

One More Helping of Turkey

Since I know most of you are still enjoying leftover turkey from Thanksgiving, I thought it would be appropriate to tag on a leftover joke from last week. Apparently I forgot to post last Wednesday's joke. In my defense, I spent the entire day working and prepping all of the side dishes since my oven was occupied by a bird for the entirety of Thursday morning.

Today dawned gloomy and rainy, and there's been no sign of the sun all day. I decided to give the boy a joke inspired by our wet weather.

I haven't had a chance to discuss this joke with the boy, but the older kids I told it to at lunch today loved it. Hope he liked it as much as they did.

I Yam what I Yam

And apparently, that's forgetful. I'll be serving up another double dose of doodles today to make up for the post I forgot yesterday.

Since Thursday is Thanksgiving, I decided to give the boy festive jokes in his lunch this week. We've only got three days of school before the holiday, but it's getting harder to find jokes I've never given him before.

I had to say the punchline of this joke a few times, and even demonstrate taking a bite of pie in a few cases, but everyone eventually got it.

Today's joke gave me a good chuckle. I did a quick quiz this morning to make sure the boy knows what a yam is. I think we're good.

What a weird week

First two early dismissals days mixed with jury duty. Then, a very unseasonal snow day. My inner timeline has been seriously disrupted this week.

Here's yesterday's doodle. None for Thursday due to the above-mentioned snow.

The boy got this joke off of a popsicle stick and I thought it was a great one to send in with lunch.

Do people still use Calamine Lotion?

I've sat down with the intention of writing this blog post at least three times today, but have so far been unsuccessful. I almost went to bed without writing it, convinced I had posted already. Good thing I checked.

You may have noticed there was no doodle yesterday. For once, it isn't because I forgot. I was summoned to perform my democratic duty, and sat on a jury. For some reason, even though the courts aren't open that early, we had to report by 8:30, and being that they called over 800 of us, I correctly assumed there would be a shortage of available parking, so I arrived early.

That meant I didn't pack lunch (luckily it was pancake day in the cafeteria), so there was no doodle. I had to report for a second day of duty today, but since I was already assigned to a trial, I had plenty of time this morning to pack a lunch.

What does that have to do with Calamine lotion, you may be asking. Nothing. But today's joke might make the blog title make more sense.

Do people just not use this anymore or have they just made it clear so that no one has to wear the tell tale pink splotches on their itchy spots?

The worst

Today's joke reminded me of the first time the boy ever dropped his ice cream. He was inconsolable, though we assured him we would buy him another cone. For those of you familiar with Carl's in Fredericksburg, you know just how terrible it is to lose even a bite of their ice cream. As I tried to calm the boy's sobs, I realized this was the first time something like this had ever happened to him. He was, quite possibly, living through the worst moment of his young life. It helped me put things into perspective a bit.

I'm no longer two years old, but losing ice cream still hurts. This joke makes the loss easier to bear.

Double Header

Apparently I composed yesterday's blog post in my head, and then failed to post it. I'm losing it, guys.

Yesterday's joke was the same as Wednesday's, but with a different punchline. One of the third graders gave me an alternate answer that I liked so much, I drew yesterday.

I had a different joke picked out for today's joke, but found out the boy knew it already! He told me I'd given it to him as a doodle before, but I haven't. I think he read it on a popsicle stick.

Whatever. At least I got to draw this cute robot instead.

Not Forgotten!

I know there was no doodle yesterday. Since it was election day here in the U.S., the boy was out of school. He did his part and accompanied me when I went to vote. They even gave him his own sticker.

I debated it briefly, but today's doodle has nothing to do with elections or politics. I think we're all ready for a break from that.

Getting Chilly

We woke up to a wet, chilly morning. Fall is here in full force, which means Winter is right around the corner.

It's not quite cold enough to bundle up like this little penguin, but it will be soon!

Getting Fit

If you think that title has anything to do with my own personal fitness, you're way off. My gym membership is so rarely used, they send me emails to make sure I haven't moved. I should cancel it, but I always convince myself it's nice to have the option to use the pool in the winter.

After the lengthy explanations involved with yesterday's joke, I went for something that should be more globally understood.

To Market

Growing up, we spent many a Saturday at local flea markets where my mom was an expert at spotting a deal. My dad worked two jobs. My mom worked during the day and went to school at night, earning her teaching certification. They worked hard, were paid little, and managed to stretch it as far as possible.

I was surprised today by how many kids didn't know what a flea market was. Maybe flea markets are dying venues. Maybe we just live in a more affluent area. I'm not sure which. Today's joke took a lot of explanation though.

Ha-Ha-Ha-Halloween

I didn't post yesterday's doodle, but it was spookily themed just like today's since it's Halloween.

Yesterday's joke went over fairly well, though I did have to explain to some kiddos that boogie means dance.

Today's joke has an even bigger word in the punchline. I think the boy will get it because we've done some activities with fossils, so he's familiar with petrified wood.

Happy Halloween!

Light Reading

The boy is a huge fan of comics. He likes everything from Teen Titans Go to DC Superhero Girls. Every couple of months we wander into our local shop and I let him choose at least three comics to bring home. He read five before bed last night. I felt he would appreciate today's joke.

Some of the other kids didn't get it. The boy loved it.

Birthday Breakfast

Today is my birthday. The joke has nothing to do with that, but does pertain to breakfast, so my alliteration in the blog post title holds up.

Maybe Tink should have been grumpier. She doesn't seem like a fairy who would enjoy cooking.

Double Doodle

This week is barreling by, and it looks like Wednesday's doodle never got posted. That means you get a double dose of puns today. It's a shame yesterday was forgotten. The joke went over really well with the kiddos.

The boy loved it. The third graders loved it. Mussels were a huge hit.

Here's hoping today's joke is just as well received, though one of my onion rings looks more like an onion wearing a rubber band.

Tuesday, October 23, 2018

Dab Cat

In case you haven't been around any small children within the past two years, the dab has become their new favorite. The boy does it all the time. So do other kids at school. The appeal is lost on this old lady, but I figured the dance move would be a hit in today's doodle.

I was correct. He loves dab cat.

Tasty Tree

This joke is coming to you courtesy of one of my third grade friends. She told me this joke, and I answered with 'palm tree.' I liked her answer better.

Two Good Answers

I had multiple kiddos give me a different answer for this joke yesterday, and I think their answer was just as good as the punchline from the joke book.

The thought the answer should be cupcake. I feel that's a valid response.

Veggies and I Have Something in Common

It should come as no surprise to you that corny jokes are my favorite. Apparently, vegetables feel the same way.

I asked the boy whether I should draw corn on the cob or candy corn. He chose the latter.

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

Toadally

Today's joke might be a hard sell for some of the kids. I'm fairly confident the boy will get it since his papa has a totem pole tattoo on his leg. Unsure how many others are acquainted with totems.

I might make this doodle into a painting and gift it to said papa. We'll see how motivated I feel later.

An Extra O

I was going to draw a cow eating string cheese for today's doodle, and then I realized that would be impossible with hooves.

Also, it would be weird for cows to eat cheese right? Maybe not if it was baby cows. At least, less weird. This joke took me to an unexpected existential place.

Needs More Color

The boy brought me a new joke book last night, and I promised I'd use it for today's doodle. It claims to be filled with Awesome Jokes. We'll see how well it lives up to its name.

I apologize for how dark the pic is. It was a dark rainy morning here and if I use a flash, the counter does weird reflective things.

Hard to Find a Good One

So, I've mentioned before that I think this joke book is running out of steam. I had to flip through a lot of pages this morning to find one I thought the boy would understand. I'm confident that this one will go over well, but pretty sure this book will soon be retired.

Buggy Double

Looks like my forgetfulness has begun in full force. In all fairness, I remembered last night that I hadn't posted the doodle, but opted to go to bed instead of going back downstairs to type up a blog post. Sleep will beat productivity every time for this mama.

As a result of yesterday's joke, I discovered that a lot of kids think termites eat ants.

As a result of their misguided beliefs regarding insect diet, I had to explain this joke multiple times.

Maybe we'll have better luck today. People still eat tuna, right? I'm not the only one picking up a can when I go to the grocery store? Full disclosure: we don't eat BumbleBee Tuna, just generic. We'll see if the boy gets this one.

Two for Tuesday

Here follows the first of what will most likely be many double posts. For the first time this year, I forgot to post the daily doodle. It might be a record for me. I'd been doing so well at remembering.

Here's yesterday's doodle. In hindsight, I should have save this one for Halloween, but I'm sure I'll find some others that will be just as creepily delightful.

Today's is another mash up joke, but covers the boy's favorite subject: the weather.

Friday, October 5, 2018

Smelly

The insect jokes this week have been a big hit. I don't know if it's because kids like bugs or the punch lines are just obvious enough that the kids understand them. Either way, the past few days have brought a lot of smiles.

Thursday, October 4, 2018

Looks comfy

I'm posting this later than normal, so I know how today's joke was received by the masses during lunch. I think it's been the week's favorite joke so far.

Wednesday, October 3, 2018

Favorite Day!

It's picture day for the boy today. While everyone else in the neighborhood put on their best, my son wore gym shorts and a Minecraft tee. At least he let me comb his hair.

I know it's not Friday, but I didn't feel like sitting on this joke for two days. Full disclosure: by Friday I would have forgotten all about it.

Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Mini

We had a pop quiz at breakfast this morning to make sure the boy knows the name of Mickey Mouse's girlfriend. Otherwise, today's joke wouldn't have worked.

Shouldn't There Be Two?

There's something about today's doodle that I adore. I'm not quite sure what it is exactly, but I really love this sketch. The joke is okay, and I discovered a lot of kids don't know this is an actual type of bird, but I really love the drawing.

Yes, he doesn't have arms and is a little mutant weirdo, but he's mine. And I love him.
