Carrot!

The boy talked me into buying a huge bag of carrots in assorted colors. Needless to say, we've been eating a lot of carrots around here lately as a result. I'm pretty sure it's what led me to today's doodle.

So, that's the happiest carrot ever in the existence of carrots, right? By the way, the boy tells me his favorite carrots are the purple ones.

Friday's post...finally!

I'm way overdue with this one, but wanted to get it posted before we start a new week!

This is a new take on one of the boy's favorite knock-knock jokes. Plus, it gave me the chance to draw that adorable little cow :)

Tomorrow marks a big change in the mamadoodle household. Mama is going back to work. I still plan to send a doodle to lunch every day, but I'm probably going to draw them the night before while I pack his lunch. We'll see if I'm able to keep up my daily posting schedule. I was failing at it a bit before, and I didn't have a job to use as an excuse!

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!

More jokes!

So, yesterday I managed to mess up on the doodle front twice. I didn't make a new blog post while the boy was at school because I forgot to take a picture of the doodle before i put it in his lunch box! Luckily, the doodle came back home in his lunch box, although it was a bit crumpled and had some food stuck to it. So, I snapped the belated photo, but then forgot to create a new blog post. Like I said, double failure.

Better late than never though, so here's yesterday's doodle:

After school today, the boy told me that one of his classmates liked today's doodle so much that he showed it to the teacher so she could read it. I get mild satisfaction from knowing that these little doodles are enjoyed by a growing audience. I'm making the boy's lunch box famous.

Let it go

Anyone who has a child under the age of ten is now singing a certain song to themselves while they read this. Don't deny it. It's ok. You're not alone. Frozen has ingrained itself on the minds of us all.

But because we all know it so well, it makes for some wonderfully terrible jokes.

The boy read this over my shoulder while I drew this morning, and loved it. He said he's going to read it to all of his friends at lunch. Then, I asked him if he always reads his jokes to his friends at lunch, and he said yes. It's ridiculous how happy this makes me. It also ensures that these bad jokes will keep coming!

One dapper gator

I watched the incredible film, Dr. Holmes, last week. It stars Ian McKellen as an aging Sherlock Holmes, and it is fantastic. While I'd love to say it inspired today's doodle, the connection only came to me as I sat down to write this blog post. I could have lied to you, could have strung you along, made you believe I am capable of these deep connections of thought and memory at seven in the morning. (I'm not.) I'm barely capable of opening my eyes at seven, let alone philosophical ponderings of films and kid jokes.

That being said, today's doodle does complement Mr. Holmes quite nicely.

I had forgotten how much I loved this ridiculous joke. It has also made me realize how adorable alligators in clothing can be. I love this little guy. I'm thinking I should have given him a monocle though. Or a pipe. That blows bubbles. My early morning brain needs to up its game.

An oldie but a goodie

There was a meme floating about Facebook yesterday that gave me the inspiration for today's doodle. It was an illustrated version of a classic kid's joke.

I forgot to ask the boy whether he liked the joke today or not. Almost forgot to post entirely, if I'm being honest. We've had a busy evening filled with writing and illustrating a new story of Oskar's, making crescent rolls, decorating a cardboard box to look like a car, coloring, punching out shapes and gluing them to paper... I feel like there have been more hours in this day than usual. The boy was in a very creative mood and we just went with it. I'll have to ask him if he remembers the joke tomorrow. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

We've got jokes

We've been playing this doodle game for a while now, and I've sent many doodles to school, some with puns or jokes, and some without.  This morning, I decided to ask the boy which type of doodle he likes better: the plain pictures or the ones with jokes. Without hesitation, he answered that he likes the jokes. This bad pun-loving mama's heart was made so glad. What does this mean for you? Brace yourself for an onslaught of terrible jokes.

Keep in mind that the jokes I doodle have to appeal to a four year old. You know the jokes they put on popsicle sticks? We're talking about that level of humor. I'm excited about all of the jokes to come. I wanted to start off with one that relates to a topic close to the boy's heart. Star Wars.

Side note: boxing suns were more difficult to draw than I expected. Still, I think this is my favorite doodle to date. I can't wait to see what the boy thinks of it!

Well, that was an unexpected vacation

Until today, the boy had been out of school for six days. We had planned on five, due to parent/teacher conferences and President's Day. Yesterday was a bonus due to a snow storm that dumped a bit more snow on us than predicted. The house has been weirdly quiet today after having the boy home for nearly a week. It is also quite a bit cleaner. So, I have that going for me, which is nice.

The return to school means the doodle hiatus is over. For now, at least, as long as winter stops filling the clouds with snow.

Hope winter is treating you kindly, wherever you are. Stay warm, and ignore the disproportionate legs on this poor little turtle!

Berry Much!

In the crazy hubbub of yesterday, I forgot to post the doodle! They boy came home from school with a bag filled with valentines and we put most of them into a scrapbook because he wanted to save them. He loves saving letters and cards he receives. We may have to get a larger scrapbook soon though.

I decided to see the food pun doodles through to the end. Since the boy is out of school for the next FIVE days due to conferences and holidays, that means no more doodles until Tuesday!

Bananas!

I'm sensing a food theme this week. Subconsciously, I must be thinking about food while I doodle in the morning.

We awoke to a light dusting of snow this morning and a two hour delay for school. You'd think, with all of that extra time to get ready in the morning, that I wouldn't have been scrambling to get the boy's lunch together before it was time to leave. However, I fail at time management, so I barely had time to get everything into his school bag before we left.

To make things easier for myself, I did another Valentine's Day pun-doodle.

For those of you wondering, we made it to school on time. We also got to drive there through the blankets of snow that decided to fall from the sky ten minutes before it was time to leave for school. It snowed all day long until it was time to pick the boy up. Luckily, none of it stuck, so the roads were fine. Huzzah for small miracles.

Donut!!

We are counting down the days until Valentine's Day advent calendar style in our house. The boy has a small Star Wars mailbox. If the flag is up, there is a small Valentine treat inside. Each day, the flag will go up once. So far, he has gotten a plush AT-AT and a plush X-wing.

Tonight, we have to work on signing all of the valentines he will take to his classmates on Wednesday. There are, of course, Star Wars valentines.

His school has parent/teacher conferences this Thursday and Friday so they are closed. That means a super short week for the boy and an early Valentine's Day celebration. It also means only three doodles this week.

To start Valentine's week off right, I decided to make the doodle love-themed. However, being the pun lover that I am, I couldn't resist doing something like this:

Ink-redible!

If you have some littles in your house, you may be familiar with a game called Splatoon. It's for the Wii U. It was the first video game that the boy requested we buy. He saved up chore and birthday money to get it. He goes through phases where he plays it every day, and then it will sit for a month or two until he rediscovers it again. We are currently in a rediscovery phase.

In Splatoon, you are a person that can transform into a squid. While a squid, you sink into the ground, but can only move freely if you're on ink.  The squid friends look a bit like this guy:

And yes, I managed to work in a terrible pun. It's my superpower.

Knock, knock

The boy loves to tell jokes. He has recently discovered humor, and loves exploring the world of making others laugh. One of the first jokes he really got, we heard during the Monsters University show at Disney World. It was, of course, a knock knock joke.  It is now one of the boy's go to jokes.

He has since branched out from knock knock jokes to such gems as 'What kind of bad guy doesn't have any teeth? A GUMMY bad guy.' He likes to take jokes he's heard and transform them into something new, though the new jokes don't always make the most sense. The previous joke, for instance, makes a bit more sense when it's a gummy bear and not a bad guy. Still, it's amusing to see what he comes up with, even if the joke itself is nonsensical.

The Dark Side and Tea

I may have mentioned that the boy is mildly obsessed with Star Wars. He loves the 'bad' guys. I drew Boba Fett for him last Friday. I decided to give his favorite a go yesterday. (And I thought I posted it yesterday too, but apparently I forgot.)

The boy is almost always Darth Vader when we have light saber duels. I feel like I'm training a dark jedi.

Today's doodle might be one of my favorites ever. I saw a collection of steampunk dinosaur cards yesterday online. They had some gems, like triceratop-hat and steam-osaurus. They also had a tea-rex. The bad joke mom in me knew what had to be done.

Hope everyone's week is going smashingly. Have a great hump day!

HedgeHugs

Happy first day of February! As DC Metro winter weather usually does, we've gone from blizzard to sixty degree weather in the span of a week. On the plus side, the roads are almost back to normal as the sun works its magic on the large piles of snow on every corner. On the negative side, I'm sure some kind of respiratory calamity will be brought upon by the erratic temps.  Hopefully, it will skip over the boy since he's already missed more days of school than he's attended since Winter Break.

Valentine's Day is two weeks away, which means I've been preparing for our Valentine's Day tradition. The boy gets a special mailbox. Each morning of the week leading up to Valentine's Day, he'll find a treat inside the mailbox. They aren't usually of the sweet variety. This year, they are all Star Wars themed. I think he's going to love it.

Since I've been gearing up for this week of prizes, Valentine's Day has been on my mind. I'm pretty sure it's what drew me to this little guy, inspired by a picture I saw on Google this morning.

The only thing that could possibly make hedgehogs cuter are hedgehugs. Also, a little tophat and monocle, but hugs work too!
